CITIES CELEBRATING LEAP DAY

BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA

Bakersfield leaps into Leap Year

BAKERSFIELD
February 1, 2012 9:00pm

• Launches new single-day visitor campaign

• “One More Day to Explore Bakersfield” offers deals

February doesn’t just have Ground Hogs Day to celebrate this year, in addition to some other things like Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day. This year February has a 29th day and that, says the Bakersfield Convention and Visitors Bureau, means there’s “One More Day to Explore Bakersfield.”

That’s what the bureau is calling its new promotion to attract tourists.

Several Bakersfield hotels and attractions are offering one-day specials for Wednesday, Feb. 29, to those visiting California’s ninth largest city.

Both the Four Points by Sheraton Bakersfield and the Holiday Inn and Suites Bakersfield North are offering discount promotions when staying the night on February 29.

Two local museums, the California Living Museum and the Bakersfield Museum of Art have special admission rates for that one day.

The McMurtrey Aquatic Center will offer free lap swims on Feb. 29 while the Bakersfield Condors professional hockey team will offer two-for-one tickets for any game the rest of the season when purchased at the box office that day.

Amtrak passengers arriving on select trains in Bakersfield on Feb. 29 can get a Free Companion Fare Coupon on their next trip aboard the San Joaquin, Capitol Corridor, or Pacific Surfliner trains in California, as well as connecting Thruway Bus service, through May 18.

WORLDWIDE CELEBRATION IDEAS

Pajama Day February 29, 2012

Promoting Autoimmune Disease Awareness

Why February 29th you ask? Because it’s International Rare Disease Day. Why pajamas you ask? Because so many people who look ‘normal’ by all accounts on the outside are struggling to stay upright as their bodies are waging a full on self attack on the inside. We spend days upon days in our pajamas at home, feeling barely alive, while we look ‘normal’. So if everyone wears pajamas for one day then we are all in the same boat together. We all look ‘normal’ when we all wear pajamas.

THE LEAPYEAR PROJECT

lyproject Worldwide Meetup Days

We think leaping together is much better than doing it alone.
So, on Leapday (Wednesday, February 29th 2012) we're asking friends around the world to meetup. Here's how:

- Five or more people
- Food (meet up at a favorite restaurant OR invite people to a home)
- Answer three questions together: What Leap will you take? Why's it meaningful? What do you hope it accomplishes?
- Post your responses on the Leapyear Project site and photos on your favorite social media sites.
