Leap Year Day happens because the earth takes just a little more than 365 days to go around the sun.

Born 1940
"I was born on Long Island February 29, 1940. Twenty two years later, in March 1962, recently discharged from the US Army, starting a new job, I discovered that another new co-worker was also born February 29, 1940, and in the same hospital! My co-worker would always claim job seniority, reasoning that since he was born in the morning and I was born in the afternoon, he was ""older"" than me. <p> Also, thanks to my daughter's travels to Russia while a college student, I got to meet and know two Russian Leap Day Baby twins - Masha (Maria) and her brother Mitya (Dimitri), born February 29, 1968 in St. Petersburg, Russia. In the early 1990's both visited the USA and spent time with us. Every February 28th (or 29th!) since then, Masha always contacts me to convey birthday wishes from her and her brother for our special Leap Day Birthday bond."
